Jack Be Little has a mysterious past. Seventeenth century botanical herbals describe cucurbits that resemble Jack Be Little (herbals are those old books with botanical pictures describing plants). After that, Jack Be Little vanished from the botanical record for centuries, until it was "discovered" in a Midwest garden! Larry Hollar (Hollar Seed Co., Colorado) recognized this little pumpkin's potential, bought its rights, and released it commercially in 1986. Mini pumpkins continue to gain popularity, with new introductions almost every year.
Jack-o'-Lanterns: Almost too small to carve, and even harder to illuminate as there is very little space for the candle, but it is possible, and they're so cute! Choose the largest "Jack Be Littles". Cut a hole in the bottom of the pumpkin, then place it over a tea light.
Culinary: Edible? Yes! Worth it? No! There's only ¼" of flesh!
